Join us at the Retail Technology Show this April

In this blogpost, our Non-Executive Director Alan Morris explains why he thinks people from every department should attend the Retail Technology Show.

Many years ago, when my company first started exhibiting at technology shows, I used to wish more people from every area of a retail business would attend, not just the IT department. We wrote our software for merchandisers, buyers, and logistics professionals, and wanted to know first hand what they thought of it. We also wanted to share our insights regarding how technology was likely to change consumer demand, which after all, is the industry’s biggest disruptor. But back then retailers saw tech playing just a supporting role in their business, so it was no surprise that our invites to attend a show were met with replies like “it’s a technology show isn’t it, it’s not my thing.”

But times have changed, retail tech is now considered to have a key role in the main cast of the business. With the advent of ecommerce, data analytics, and increasingly innovative customer experiences, technology is now integral to driving growth and shaping the future landscape of retailing. Tech has to be “every retailer’s thing”, and this is why I hope to see people from every department across a retail company present at the up coming Retail Technology Show this April.

Show attendance will provide substantial benefits. Firstly, these events offer invaluable insights into emerging technologies that are reshaping the retail landscape. Understanding these trends is essential for making informed decisions and ensuring the continued relevance and competitiveness of any retail business. By staying abreast of the latest innovations, non-tech individuals can strategically position their companies for success in an ever evolving market.

Secondly, attending tech shows provides ample networking opportunities. Non-technical professionals can connect with industry experts, technology vendors, and other businesses, fostering collaborations and partnerships. Building a robust network in the tech sphere enables these individuals to gain first hand knowledge of how cutting-edge solutions can be customised to address specific challenges within the retail sector. Networking also facilitates cross-industry collaborations that can lead to innovative approaches and shared resources.

Lastly, these events offer a unique platform for learning and skills development. Workshops, seminars, and presentations at tech shows provide non-tech professionals with a deeper understanding of the practical applications of various technologies in the context of retail. This exposure not only enhances their knowledge base but also equips them to engage effectively with their technical counterparts within the organisation. By attending tech shows, non-technical individuals can contribute meaningfully to the integration of technology into various facets of retail operations, ensuring a holistic and forward-thinking approach to business growth.
