Amazon in the flesh? You can now buy your goods in person rather than through Amazon.com but there’s a catch – there aren’t any cash registers or checkouts. You can simply walk in, pick out what you want and walk out – a “Just Walk Out” shopping experience.
It works via the Amazon Go application, similar to the technology found in self-driving cars. The technology can detect when products are taken or returned to the shelves and keeps track of the in your virtual cart. This adds the items to their virtual cart and if the consumer decides to leave the store with them rather than returning them to the shelf, their account is charged through the Amazon Go app.
The technology uses RFID readers, cameras and facial recognition to track which customer is in store and which items they have taken from the shelves. This removes the time and hassle of having to wait in line to purchase products, making the shopping experience more convenient for customers.
It is gradually being rolled out by Amazon, but it is likely other retailers may follow suit soon in 2020 and beyond.
